My husband pushes literacy on me almost daily as a replacement for my internet, blog, youtube and makeup addiction. The problem isn't that I dislike reading, it's that I become so completely engrossed in any book I read (well ones I like anyway) and do things like stay up till 3am to finish said book when I have to be up at 5am.
Anyway, I recently started reading a new series and I love it! I prefer series as all books (no matter how long) seem too short and I really enjoy character development, which you can delve more into with a longer series.
The author is Laurie R. King and the first book in the series is called The Beekeeper's Apprentice. It follows a girl who become apprenticed to Sherlock Holmes in the most peculiar way and they develop an interesting almost father-daughter relationship. Anymore and I'd be giving away the plot! The series has gotten rave reviews and I can see why. I stayed up till lord knows what hour finishing the first in the series last night and I now have my paws on the 2nd, A Monstrous Regiment of Women. Very excited.
A bit more about my literary loves, my favorite book of all time is the Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. I also like Ken Follet books, though they tend to be a little naughty. I recently finished a series on the art world in Italy which is also fab by Iain Pears (don't remember the first book in the series, but the two main characters are Jonathan Argyll & Flavia di Stefano). I tend to gravitate towards historical fiction (shocker I'm sure).
What kind of books do you like? Any recommendations for me?
I married a professor!!! And I didn't think I liked teachers to begin with. lol Fooled myself.
ReplyDeleteI used to read tons of horror. I'd spend my allowance on the thickest horror paperback I could find. I dearly love classic horror too.
Now, I read either about exercise or self-improvement/empowerment books. My favorite of all is 'Choices' by Shad Helmstetter. Next I'd say is 'The Book of Secrets' by Deepak Chopra.
You might throw a book at me, but I haven't read a fiction book since '97! I have listened to a couple on tape though. And, actually, I have been thinking about getting into that again. I drive a lot with my job and I do enjoy having a story read to me. Laurie King's book sounds like one that would be very interesting. Could be a good place to start, don't you think?
@Kim: Try the Laurie King book! It's really good. And my husband pretends to moonlight as a professor on his off days (well not really but he sure acts like one and with the beard, he kind of fits the part). =)
